Inland Marine Insurance

Inland marine insurance is one of the most misunderstood coverages in the industry—largely because the name suggests it has something to do with boats or the ocean. In reality, it has everything to do with land-based transportation and mobile equipment.
While standard commercial property insurance protects your assets at a fixed address, inland marine insurance is the "floater" that follows your property wherever it goes.
Why "Inland Marine"?
The name is a historical leftover from "Ocean Marine" insurance, which covered goods on ships. As trade moved to trains and trucks, insurers created "Inland" marine to cover cargo moving over land.
Today, it is the essential coverage for any business that:
-
Transports tools or equipment to different job sites.
-
Ships products to customers via truck, train, or plane.
-
Possesses property belonging to others (like a repair shop or dry cleaner).
-
Owns high-value "mobile" assets like medical imaging machines or specialized construction gear.
Essential Inland Marine Coverages
1. Contractor’s Tools & Equipment
This is the most common use for inland marine. While your office building is covered by property insurance, your excavators, power tools, and generators are covered by this while they are on your truck or at a job site.
Example: A trailer full of specialized plumbing tools is stolen from a hotel parking lot while the crew is traveling for a project.
2. Installation Floaters
This covers materials from the moment they are loaded onto your truck until they are fully installed and accepted by the client.
-
Covers: High-value items like HVAC units, custom cabinetry, or solar panels while they are "in transit" or sitting at the job site awaiting installation.
3. Bailee’s Customer Coverage
If your business takes possession of a customer's property to service, repair, or store it, you are a "bailee." Standard liability doesn't always cover the value of the item itself—but a Bailee’s policy does.
-
Ideal For: Computer repair shops, dry cleaners, jewelers, and warehouses.
4. Motor Truck Cargo
If you are a for-hire trucker or a business that delivers its own goods, this protects the actual inventory in the back of the vehicle from collisions, fire, or theft during the journey.
5. EDP (Electronic Data Processing)
While a standard policy might cover a desk and a chair, an EDP floater provides specialized protection for high-end servers, laptops, and even the "lost data" itself if a computer system is damaged while being moved or used off-site.
